A pair of former Broncos were making news in the NHL last week, as retired d-man Mitch Love and one-time Head Coach and General Manager Dean Chynoweth made moves to new teams.

A WHL Mitch Love Trading Card circa 2001Love, who played for Swift Current from 2001 to 2003, was named the new bench boss of the Calgary Flames AHL affiliate Stockton Heat.

The 1984-born retired defenceman played 122 games over two seasons with the Broncos, scoring 7 goals and 26 assists with 459 penalty minutes, a record 327 of those in the 2002-2003 season.

Never breaking into the NHL ranks, Love was signed by the Colorado Avalance in 2005 and assigned to the Lowell Lockmonsters.

He would spend the majority of his playing career in various AHL clubs until announcing his retirement in 2011 to take an assistant coach with the Everett Silvertips, the team with which he had the most success as a player.

In 2018 he was named Head Coach of the Saskatoon Blades, where he lead them to a 79 - 39 - 10 and 3 record.

Chynoweth, meanwhile, is giving up southern hospitality for a move to the big smoke. 

Dean ChynowethThe Carolina Hurricanes Assistant Coach is taking a similar position with the Maple Leafs, taking over a spot left vacant with the departure of Dave Haskol to the Seattle Kraken.

Chynoweth was the General Manager and Head Coach of the Broncos from 2004 to 2008, where he led the team to 162 wins and 163 losses and a string of first-round playoff exits.

A franchise co-owner of the Kootenay Ice, a three-season stint as an assistant coach for the New Islanders would follow in 2009 and he would later take a head coach role with the Lake Erie Monsters.

In 2016 the Ice would be sold and Chynoweth would take on an assistant manager role with the Carolina Hurricanes.
