A release yesterday by the provincial government shed some light into a nearly $1 million project carried out at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School earlier this year.

While the Chinook School Division was performing some maintenance and upgrade work at the high school they discovered some asbestos.

"During that work in the crawlspace and flooring asbestos was identified," Saskatchewan's Assistant Deputy Minister of Education Rory Jensen said. "At that point work needed to stop so, we could complete this abatement."

The project took eight months to complete at the lone high school in Swift Current and was finished in February of this year.

"I can't speak to if there is additional asbestos in the school and asbestos as long as it's not disturbed it is perfectly safe," he said. "However when they were doing this upgrade and maintenance work it was identified so we had to stop and remove any asbestos that could be disturbed during this work to ensure that it is safe and there was no risk to the students."

Including the asbestos remediation, upgrades to the floor, and repairs to the surfaces the total price tag came in at $940,000.

The general contract for this project was based out of Alberta but work was sub-contracted out to Saskatchewan companies.
