Travelling to 55 Saskatchewan communities this year, the Heart and Stroke Big Bike arrives in Swift Current tomorrow.

Pamela Hujber, the Manager of Big Bike for Saskatchewan, says "The Heart and Stroke Foundation Big Bike is a 30-person bicycle, it is 30 feet long and weighs 2,000 pounds. On May 28th, we have a ride in the Swift Current community and Lindsay Gerbrandt is our team captain at the Living Sky Casino. That'll be a fun ride, heading out with a bunch of casino staff and playing with the water guns and having a good time."

Anybody can come and cheer them on, she says, adding, "They have a set ridership for their teams. The way the teams work is we have one dedicated team captain who helps gather a team of 28 other riders who come out and fundraise and participate on the Big Bike."

Team captain Michael Kehler leads the Big Bike ride in Swift Current's Centennial parade June 28th.

Pamela says, "One of my favourite things about Big Bike is this gives people a platform and an opportunity to fight back against heart disease and stroke. The team building skills that it provides and the great feeling that it fosters at the end of the day when everybody's had the opportunity to stand up and come together to fight heart disease and stroke is just so important. We see the joy on people's faces. I always like to say that we have a great time, but we have a very serious message and that message is to raise funds and to fight heart disease and stroke and this is our opportunity to do that."

For 2014, Saskatchewan's provincial Big Bike fundraising goal is $300,000.

"We're fighting for a brighter future," she says. "By 2020, the goal of the Heart and Stroke Foundation is to significantly improve the health of Canadians by decreasing the risk of heart factors for heart disease and stroke by 10 %. That's a really significant goal and we take it pretty seriously. That's what we're fighting for this year."

Big Bike is a Saskatchewan favourite with dedicated team captains and riders in communities all throughout the province.
