The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health has approved an application for a primary health care site to be implemented in Cabri.

It was announced earlier this week that the government would fund the proposal to operate five days per week.

Bryce Martin, executive director primary health care for the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) in the southwest area, said the model fits the needs of Cabri and the surrounding areas very well.

"It [the model] organizes health services to provide timely access to the right kind of care via a team of professional," he said.

The primary health care model for Cabri will include a full-time nurse practitioner and one day a week a visiting physician. It also at times will include a variety of health educators, dietitians, pharmacists, and EMS staff.

This option arose while the former Cypress Health Region was trying to find a replacement physician for Dr. Fanie de Nysschen after he retired last summer.

"Primary health care is being emphasized as the way to go, not only in rural Saskatchewan but in many of the urban centres as well," Martin said.

The primary health care site will be located at Cabri Medical Clinic once staff has been recruited, and a few upgrades inside the building are complete.
