After several upset nurses and healthcare workers gathered at the Palliser Regional Care Centre yesterday, the Cypress Health Region is defending their plan to move to 8-hour shifts.

The nurses were concerned that moving from 12-hour shifts to eight would drastically affect their quality of life, and that no consultation was made prior to the decision.

Health Region Interim CEO Beth Vachon says the new staffing mix will help improve care at long-term care homes.

The new shifts will be phased into five long-term care facilities in November, and has been in place at the Lab Department at Cypress Regional Hospital for the last week.
