Local residents are now able to memorialize their friends and loved ones through the memorial bench program.

General Manager of Community Services for the City of Swift Current Dean Robson says there will be two options available for purchase.

"One of the benches goes into the irrigated spaces, very similar to some of our existing benches. We also have more of a natural bench which goes into the unirrigated spaces," Robson said.

The cost will range from $2600-$2900 depending on whether it is an irrigated ornamental bench or a natural unirrigated bench.

The cost of the bench includes a 2 x 8 inch plaque which will have a 20 word maximum and the message on the bench along with the bench's location and it must be approved by the city.

Robson adds that while they can be placed in parkway lands or any parks/open space areas, there is criteria for their placement.

"If we already have two or three there we would not put another one there, depending what your choice is. Some people do not want to be along the parkway. They want to be in areas maybe like Highland Park," he said. "There is a little bit of criteria it's not simply that anyone can put one there and it goes to any location you want."

The city has a memorial tree program which Robson says has been very successful for a number of years.

"We are fortunate to have additional benches in parkway, and pathway areas so that is a huge bonus. They not only help other people but also honors those in need or memorializes someone you love", according to Robson.

Those interested in applying to the memorial bench program can do so by contacting Community Services at City Hall.
