A pair of local improvement projects for this year won't be happening after some residents of Swift Current vetoed them.

The projects would have cost $570,000 with half coming from the City's budget and the remaining half from the affected residents.

Tim Marcus, the chief administrative officer with the City, said they normally want to replace the sidewalks, curbs, and gutters at the same time as they pave the streets.

"The sidewalk is in such condition that it makes sense to replace it when you're doing the road," Marcus said. "We certainly don't want to go back in a few years and saw-cut three feet of asphalt from the curb, it doesn't look good."

With the majority of residents on 8th Avenue NE from Connaught Drive to Sidney Street and residents on Allen Drive electing to decline the projects, the City will now move the $285,000 elsewhere.

"In this case, we're looking at allocating it to some of the streets that have been hit pretty hard by the freeze-thaw cycle that we've had this spring/winter," Marcus explained.

The City allows local improvement projects to be vetoed by the affected residents three times before the project ultimately becomes the City's choice.
