Correction:  The first fires occurred in March and not May as had been previously reported.

Original Story:

For months, something has been happening in the village of Tompkins.

Since May of this year, 5 separate fires have destroyed or damaged 7 different homes, leading some to suspect foul play and calling for media involvement.

In May, four fires, reportedly in a single night, damaged four homes. And more recently a single fire in an abandoned home damaged homes on either side of it.

Speaking to the RCMP, they would only confirm to Swift Current Online that an investigation was underway by the fire commissioner to determine the cause of the most recent blaze and that he (the source from the RCMP) was unable to say whether or not the RCMP had been brought into the investigation yet or not, as that normally happens when (and if) the fire commissioner finds evidence to support such a move.

A source within the village of Tompkins spoke with Swift Current Online and provided more details regarding an internal investigation being undertaken by the Tompkins fire department.

While some of what was said will not be repeated in order to protect a possible investigation, the source did say that many in the village have begun to sleep with fire extinguishers next to their beds and that it was important for the story to be told regardless of official confirmation in order to protect the people who call Tompkins home.

Swift Current Online will continue to monitor this story and provide updates as they are presented to us by the authorities in the matter.
