A small section of SaskPower customers just outside of Swift Current will be in the dark for a significant portion of Sunday.

The Crown corporation will be upgrading several lines to the northwest, west, and southwest of the city causing a planned power outage from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Joel Cherry, a spokesperson for SaskPower, said the improvements are part of their ongoing maintenance work across Saskatchewan.

"Taking a planned outage now means that there will be fewer unplanned outages down the line as we have a new and rebuilt line there," he said.

The work will affect 132 customers near the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 32 junction.

"It's kind of a network of lines affected there that are affected," he said. "When we do our switching we can't necessarily just turn one section of line off, that's why a larger geographical area is affected."

About one-third of all SaskPower outages annually are caused by aging infrastructure.
