The Federal government is looking at legislation to crack down on gas station operators who overcharge customers.

The Fairness at the Pumps Act would increase the fines gas stations face.  First-time offenders would be fined $10,000, while repeat offenders would get hit with a fine worth $50,000.

It's estimated  that 6% of Canada's gas pumps don't dispense the correct amount.  An example of this would be pumping $20 worth of fuel and only getting $19.

While the inaccurate measurements are often honest mistakes, government officials say some stores are ripping us off on purpose.
