After a few months of work, bridge construction is wrapping up at Highway 1 East in Swift Current.

Steve Shaheen, the interactive and social media consultant for Saskatchewan's Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, said the project could be completed for this weekend.

"Work on the bridge began in late March, including stripping the bridge basically down to its foundation," Shaheen said. "The bridge will reopen once paving is complete, and that's weather permitting, which could be by the weekend."

Initially slated to reopen around the end of June, Shaheen said when the bridge was being stripped down, there wound up being more to work on than originally anticipated.

"I guess the thing is with bridge projects - especially rehabs - they're always interesting because it's similar to a house renovation," he said. "Once you strip things down, you sometimes find things that need to be fixed. We made some progress and things should be ready to reopen on the weekend."

Shaheen added that paving is the final step before things are back to normal.

"Things are wrapping up," Shaheen said. "Just some of the things that have been done: the girders will have been installed, the deck reinforcement has been completed, the deck pouring is complete, curbs have also been poured, water proofing has been complete to protect the deck from water infiltration, once that happens then the paving can commence."

With the project in its final stages, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is still reminding motorists to obey posted speed limits in construction zones.
