While Swift Current doesn't have too many trails, there are still plenty of people riding around on snowmobiles in the area.

While riding through Swift Current isn't allowed, riding through the ditches on the way to more open areas is common enough. Riders coming through will want to exercise caution in order to stay on the friendly side of the RCMP out on patrol.

Sharing advice on the matter of traversing the city by sled, is Mike Erdahl, a sales associate at Robertson Motorsports & Marine in Swift Current.

"Our biggest concern around here is probably alcohol," certified Erdahl. "Lots of guys still like to have fun with a bunch of buddies, drinking and driving."

Erdahl encourages people to also be considerate of their alcohol intake before going for a ride. Operating a snowmobile while under the influence is very much illegal. Before turning the ignition, riders should have ceased drinking a few hours beforehand.

"Make sure you have an extra belt and stuff with you in case you get into any kind of trouble and burn a belt off," said Erdahl. "You want to make sure you have a shovel, or maybe a poker stick or something like that to check some of the trails if you haven't been on them before."

Riders need to wear a helmet and dress for the weather. A high-visibility jacket can go a long way if someone falls off, or gets lost.

Making sure to carry spare fuel and water on board is a good practice. Ensuring a sled is in full running condition beforehand is better, like checking the brakes, throttle, and headlights.

While riding alone isn't against any rules, it's smart to travel with others if you are going long distances or for extended periods. For anyone going solo, letting people know you are going out, where you plan to be, and when you plan to arrive or return is a great way to help ensure your own safety.

For those looking for developed trails, there isn't too much in the way of anything in the Southwest. Anyone looking to make use of a manicured and well-kept trail will have to travel north in Saskatchewan for them.

Here in Swift Current and the southwest, most riding is done in rural areas. Anyone that is riding in the area needs to remember to respect private land, and to ask for permission before sledding in the area.
