Yesterday news broke that Swift Current would be hosting Hockey Day in Canada 2019 next winter, and it sounds like there will be quite a bit going on in the community for the event.

The Swift Current Broncos, who will be trying to defend their 2017-18 WHL Championship, are home to take on the Saskatoon Blades on February 9, as it's the third time the day-long programming, which will be on Sportsnet, will be held in Saskatchewan.

Swift Current Mayor Denis Perrault said there's plenty shaping up for the celebration of one of Canada's national sports.

"We'll have details coming out over the next few months. Our committee that's been working on this for the last few months already has some really fun ideas, and it'll be a great chance to showcase our community, but also just a great chance to get together and celebrate all the hockey in Swift Current."

This past year Hockey Day in Canada was held in Cornerbrook, Nfld., after taking place in Kenora, Ont. in 2017. It was in Lloydminster in 2014 and Shaunavon in 2004.

"It's been in some cool spots, and it's a great chance just truly to showcase your community. I'm over the moon thrilled. It's going to be a lot of fun," Perrault said. "We watch pieces of it throughout that day, and there's always something that jumps at your eye, right? Ron and Don are going to be in Swift all day that day - that's pretty special."

The City of Swift Current has to provide some in-kind, in form of facilities (like the Innovation Credit Union iPlex), and work to get things set up.

It'll be the 30th anniversary of the last time the Memorial Cup was won by a Saskatchewan hockey team - which was the 1988-89 Broncos. (The Regina Pats came within one win of winning in this past tournament.)

"I won't go into too many details," Perrault said. "But this is something that's not just going to happen on the one day. We've got some pieces that we'll be able to add to in the days leading up to it that I think are just excellent ways to celebrate hockey in Swift."
