The province has released its traffic ticket numbers for the month of July, and it appears many are simply not getting the message when it comes to reducing speed in construction zones.

"Seventeen tickets were for speeding in a work zone where a highway worker was present and ninety-nine people for passing emergency vehicles going more than 60 km/h," said Kelly Brinkworth with SGI.

SGI remind motorists to slow to 60km/hour in all orange zones, even when workers are not present. Over 3,500 tickets were handed out last month on Saskatchewan Highways, including 100 impaired driving offences and 130 for distracted driving.

Brinkworth adds that some drivers end up paying more than their tickets.

"In addition to the cost of the ticket, people would also be facing in some cases, vehicle seizures. So, some of those offenses like going more than 50 km/h over the speed limit is a seven day vehicle seizure. On top of your speeding ticket, you may actually receive a financial penalty under the Safe Driver Recognition Program and lose some of your insurance discount," she said.

SGI's focus for the month of August is sharing the road with commercial drivers.
