Earlier this month, Hailey Clark was declared the NDP candidate for Swift Current in the upcoming provincial election, which is taking place in April next year.

Clark grew up in Vanguard and currently resides in Regina, although she says she makes frequent visits to the city and area. At 20 years-old, Clark is new to the political arena and admits it will be a challenge to contest Premier Brad Wall in his own riding.

"Even though I've never met Mr. Wall in person, I've heard so many great things about him - I think it will be a really good challenge. I'm not thinking, 'Oh we are going to come out on top' - I hope we will, because we have so many great ideas. But even if we can change Mr. Wall's mind and point out some things that can better the community. As long as the people are happy and in good standing, that's all I really care about," she said.

Clark completed the French as a second language program at the University of Regina, and is now an assistant manager for Roots Canada. She says there are some key issues that she wants discussed in the next provincial election.

"One, for instance, is ambulance fare and healthcare, just because I know how expensive is can be in rural Saskatchewan and not have anybody worried about paying to get to a hospital and it costing so much of out their own pocket. As well as the P-3 projects and how they're private sector and it costs a little bit more. I'd just like to keep things public and for the people," she said.

Clark cites the use of the P-3 model, public-private partnerships in the construction of provincial projects, such as the upcoming long term care facility in Swift Current.

"It's something that is going to cost a lot for people to be a part of and that people might not be able to use because they're paying out of their own pocket. I think that healthcare should be a government-paid option," she said.

The next provincial election is set for April 4th of next year.
