Saskatchewan's biggest conservation event of the year was held last weekend at Old Man on His Back.

Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) members, along with volunteers, capped fence posts and completed a Bio Blitz.

The Bio Blitz was a species inventory count of Bison in the area.

Natalie Hassett, Natural Areas Manager for the Nature Conservancy, says the event was a great chance for volunteers to get acquainted with the NCC.

"Well it's a great opportunity for people to get out and help with important stewardship actions on the property. We got over 1 mile of fence-work done. With staff doing that, it would have taken quite a bit of time. To have the 30+ volunteers and staff out there, we were able to accomplish that in a much shorter time span. It's also a great chance for people to get out and witness the work that the NCC does."

Hassett also spoke more on how volunteers played a big part in the success of the event.

"It was great to have everyone out there. we had some new volunteers this year as well as some returning ones. we're extremely thankful for everyone who made the trip out to the property on the weekend it was great to get to know you as well as reconnect with some of our old friends. yeah, it was a really successful weekend."

Old Man on His Back has been officially designated as a Nocturnal Preserve by the Royal Astronomical Society.
