Vibrant, rich and visually stimulating -- that's what the Art Gallery of Swift Current has in store with its latest installment.

Gabriela Garcia-Luna's photo-based multimedia exhibition, Flor y Canto (Flower and Song), explores themes of unity, separation, fragility and resilience, encouraging reflection on how individuals relate to the natural world.

Curator for the gallery, Luke Maddaford, is looking forward to the public reception tomorrow evening to introduce the exhibition to the community.

“The work is photo based, but it's digitally collaged so it's a number of different photos compiled into one composition,” he described. “There's really rich colors and depth to it, a lot to visually latch on to for the viewer.”

Based out of Saskatoon, Garcia-Luna was born in Mexico and pulls inspiration from her roots in her work. This body of art compiles photographs of flowers and plants from both places she’s called home, using layers of drawing, sculpting, and mark making -- fusing florals across continents.

The Friday evening come-and-go event gets underway at 7 p.m. with snacks and drinks, live music performed by Brad Mahon, and the opportunity for southwest residents to interact with the artist herself.

“It's a really great opportunity to have that one-on-one with artists and get more context on the work and really understand what they're doing with it,” Maddaford said. “This is not really a formal artist talk, so it will be a lot easier to access if it's something that you haven't been to before.”

Flor y Canto will reside at the Art Gallery of Swift Current until June 7.
