Swift Current RCMP will soon be using a new form of transportation.

Trained members have already begun patrolling the city on bikes.

Staff Sergeant Gary Hodges with the city RCMP says there are a number of advantages that come along with bike patrol.

"There's lots of pluses from a community policing perspective. Someone driving down the road in a police car obviously there's not the one on one contact that comes with a pedal bike. Their out there able to talk to people in the community and make sure they are up to speed with what's going on. Also, their ability to protect certain crimes on bikes believe it or not is alot more effective then in cars."

City Councillor, Ron Toles says he is looking forward to the one on one interaction that the bike patrol will bring.

"It does make them more accessible, it makes them more personable. That makes them alot easier to talk to and approach. I like to see as much of that from the younger generation. I think the younger generation will appreciate it.

RCMP members have been patrolling areas such as highland park and downtown and Sergeant Hodges says they will be present at a number of the city's Summer festivals.
