Sunday morning Pride Week in Swift Current wrapped up with its final event.

The week featured a flag raising, trivia night, a sexual health workshop, glam glow bowling, the pride bbq and march, a drag workshop and Lyric pride dance, and wrapped up with a Happy Ever After queer brunch.

Andrea McCrimmon, the chair of the Southwest Saskatchewan Pride, said that the week overall was a success.

"It's gone really well," she said. "We had lots of people out to our events throughout the week, and we had a lot of fun and had some really educational moments, and it's been a really wonderful week."

McCrimmon said that week shows that Swift Current has progressed in accepting the LGBTQ community.

"People used to be very afraid of coming out and felt like if they were gay or bisexual or transgender that they would have to leave Swift Current and that's just really sad and not true anymore," she said. "There is a lot of support here and a very widespread community of support as you can see by everyone who supported Pride Week 2018. There is acceptance here, and we're working to make sure everyone is safe and valued here."

McCrimmon said that to see the community support throughout the week makes people feel like they are accepted.

"I think it makes LGBTQ people feel safe and welcome and like they can find community and acceptance, and that's life-changing," she said. "LGBTQ people and LGBTQ teens are at higher risks for depression and at a higher risk for suicide and having this community support is just so good for people's mental health and physical safety. It's really life-changing to see the change of community support."

McCrimmon said that to see all the pride flags and colours in business windows and around Swift Current was wonderful.

"It just really demonstrates that the business community realizes that it's important to show support for human rights," she said. "That LGBTQ people are an important part of the community and an important part of the local economy, and together we help to make Swift Current strong and prosperous."

McCrimmon said that this year's Pride Week was made so successful due to the participation of the youth.

"The youth are really critical to the success of Swift Current pride week," she said. "They really bring a wonderful enthusiasm and energy to it, and it really does change their lives for better knowing that there is acceptance out there for no matter what their gender and sexual orientation is."

McCrimmon added that this year they saw lots of people attend the events, and they had lots of fun hosting them.
