These are just a few of the many adoptable animals at the Swift Current SPCA Shelter.

The SPCA is holding its first ever "Give Me Shelter" Radiothon today with the Eagle 94.1 broadcasting live from Swift Current Mall for 12 hours.

The Radiothon will raise money for the ongoing operations at the shelter, which relies solely on public support to keep the doors open as they receive no federal or provincial funding.

"The Radiothon will be very important for the shelter, just to raise awareness of what we do. A lot of the times what we do here is misconstrued, so it will just raise awareness as to what we actually do here, what we find important and how we run our shelter day to day," said Chantel Kennedy, Swift Current SPCA Shelter Assistant Manager. "That money will all go towards keeping the shelter running. Paying the bills, paying for the veterinary care, it takes a lot of money to get them all spayed, neutered and vaccinated. As well as covering up the fact that we don't make a profit on our animals. We take a loss on every animal that is adopted out so they money needs to come from somewhere, from someone."

Kennedy says every day is a busy day at the shelter, and adds they are always looking for people to adopt animals.

"It doesn't matter the age of the animal when they come in or what their issues are, we do our best to work with them to make sure they are provided for as best as we possibly can," she added. "Kennel space only opens up as fast as the animals go out, so for much of last year, we were very, very full to the point of overflow with animals because they weren't being adopted out. We only euthanize for terminal illness or severe aggression. Everything is made to look tidy, our cats cages are constantly being straightened as they like to play a lot with their litter boxes, their food and their water splashes out. We do a lot of socialization with the animals out front, so you'll walk into the building and you'll find dogs running around playing with us or learning new tricks."
