A building with a long history in the city now has a new name.

The Swift Current Recreation Centre was officially renamed the 'Colonel Clifton Centre' at this week's City Council meeting after the family of long time Swift Current resident Iver Clifton submitted an application that was approved by members of council.

"He was the last Commanding Officer of the 14th Hussars that were based out of that building and had an involvement with the Cadet group in the community," says Director of Engineering Mac Forster who adds that new signage and a memorial plaque will soon be in place at the facility.

"We'll move fairly quickly on getting the proper signage on at the site, with an information package to be available on the inside as well explaining who Mr. Clifton was and his involvement in the community."

Submission from the Clifton family's application to City Council this past week:

"My husband (Iver Clifton) has always been an active participant on many boards and committees at both local and provincial levels as well as having served in national office as President of the Army Cadet league of Canada.

He was the organizing member for fundraising and purchase of the Mayoral Chain of Office in 2003. He also organized and financed the retrieval and placement of the World War II armoured military tank currently situated outside the Recreation Centre and overlooking 6th Avenue N.E.

Iver was always proud of his regiment; it was a very sad day when he had to lock the door of the Armoury"
