The use of knives when committing violent crimes is a growing concern in Saskatchewan.

Justice Minister Don Morgan says they are trying to introduce new legislation to deal with the knife problem.  This legislation would allow police to confiscate knives and detain suspects.

Morgan adds that the legislation is not intended to punish the person that carries a pen knife or a small pocket knife, but rather to allow police to use their judgement to determine if the knife is intended to be used as a weapon.

The plan is to introduce the new legislation in the fall.
