A provincial framework to support student success in reading is now in place and available to teachers across Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan Reads has been developed to help improve student reading in the province.

Liam Choo-Foo, Director of Education for the Chinook School Division says reading is a very important skill for students.

"There is an extremely strong correlation between the kids that are reading at grade level in grade 3, and the kids that graduate grade 12. So what we want to do is invest in students early and get them reading at grade level so that they have the best opportunity for graduation, which we all know gives them the best opportunities possible to be successful in their future's."

As of June 2014, 70 perfect of grade 3 students were reading at or above average, a 5 percent increase from last year, which Choo-Foo is excited to see.

"Really, all we did in that year was state that this was going to be a focus for us as a province. Saskatchewan Reads was only developed throughout the 2014-15 school year and is now just getting out into schools, so I'm fully expecting these numbers to climb."

The province has set their goal to have 80 percent of students reading at or above grade level by 2020.
