Senior badminton players travelled to Rosetown for SHSAA regionals on Saturday, May 5.

In boys’ singles, Daniel Bueckert and Brandyn Albrecht from Leader had some very tough competition.  The boys both finished at 1-2 in their respective pools and did not advance to the playoff rounds.

In girls’ singles, Hope Anderson (Frontier) had a record of 1-2 in her pool and did not advance to the playoff round.  Tianna Kissick (Swift Current Comp) finished first in her pool with a record of 3-0.  She beat Elrose in the semi (21-10, 21-18).  This put her in the final against a girl from Allan. Tianna won by scores of 21-19, 21-13 to capture the regional gold.

In boys’ doubles, the defending provincial champs Austin Dirk/Spenser Kosolofski (Fox Valley) finished first in their pool with a record of 3-0 despite Austin battling a leg injury.  The Swift Current combo of Darby Crozier/Evan Laturnus finished second in their pool with a record of 2-1.  The semi final was an all Southwest affair with Fox Valley defeating Swift Current 21-15, 21-8.  Unfortunately, the Fox Valley duo had to forfeit the final due to Austin’s injury.  But they still qualify for provincials.  The Swift Current boys then played in the bronze final but came up just short to Avonlea (21-17, 24-22).

The girls’ doubles category was dominated by the Southwest.  Both the Maple Creek (Andrea Frey/Raelene Boschee) and Ponteix teams (Emily LeBlanc/Alyssa Fournier) finished first in their pools with 3-0 records.  Both teams were successful in the semi’s as well.  Ponteix beat Biggar (21-13, 21-9) while Maple Creek defeated Elrose (21-16, 21-18).  The final saw a repeat of our District championships with Maple Creek defeating Ponteix to win the regional gold (19-21, 21-15, 21-16).

In mixed doubles, the Maple Creek pair of Cole Bennett/Annie He had a record of 1-2 and did not advance to the playoffs.  The Ponteix pairing of Irvin Lamb/Taylor Goffinet finished first in their pool 3-0.  The semi final saw Ponteix defeat Gravelbourg in a very hard fought battle 21-19, 19-21, 21-15.  The gold medal was captured by beating Biggar (21-12, 21-14).

The Southwest will be well represented at Provincials in Melfort on Saturday, May 12 with two girls doubles teams, one girls singles team, one boys doubles team and one mixed doubles team.
