Saskatchewan residents are now able to request that the sex field on driver’s licenses and SGI-issued photo identification be left blank.

Heather Hubic, Communications Consultant with SGI provides some further details.

"Will now be able to choose no designation in the sex designation field. So that means they can leave it blank on their SGI driver's license and photo id. This is in addition to the other options that customers already have which is male, female or X option.

Hubic details the need for the change.

"Back in 2019, SGI began offering X as an option for those who did not identify as male or female. We heard from members of the community who said they would like to see us go a step further and would prefer the option of no letter. So in consultation with the Human Rights Commission, SGI now has the resources and the processes in place that allow us to leave that spot entirely blank."

According to Hubic, SGI wants to allow customers to identify how they choose their identification.

Those that decide to make the change should be aware that SGI can't guarantee that a Saskatchewan-issued driver's license without sex designation will be accepted by other organizations and jurisdictions.

No documentation will be required to remove the sex designation and there will be no charge for making this change to a driver’s license or photo identification card.

Residents interested in making the change can do so by heading down to any motor license issuer.
