43-year-old Shaun Ross Wiebe from southwestern Saskatchewan has been charged with manslaughter and assault causing bodily harm in the 2018 death of Vernon, B.C. resident Heather Barker.

In the early morning hours of March 15, 2018, Barker was admitted to hospital with life-threatening injuries to which she would eventually succumb later that same day.  The nature of the injuries would prompt a 3-year investigation.

Originally from the Herbert area, Wiebe graduated from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Saskatchewan in 2002 and moved to British Columbia to work in various pharmacies, eventually owning and operating his own pharmacy in Vernon.

Wiebe was arrested last Friday by the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP's serious crime unit and formally charged with manslaughter in Barker's death as well as one count of assault causing bodily harm that arose from a separate incident the month prior.

According to an RCMP report on Monday, Wiebe appeared on both charges before a justice and was held in custody over the weekend until his next court appearance which had been scheduled for January 26. However, that has now been pushed to February 10, 2021.

The release contained no other information, however, a December 2019 statement from the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia shows that Wiebe had had his registration with the organization suspended due to an unspecified substance addiction and was therefore temporarily barred from working as a pharmacist.

As of the date of this story, there is no word on whether that suspension has been lifted.
