Leafs have tying goal called back in loss to Coyotes

Shayne Gostisbehere scored the winner in the third period as the Arizona Coyotes upset the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 for their first win of the NHL season. 

The Leafs appeared to tie the game on a goal by Alexander Kerfoot with 39 seconds left in regulation, but it was called back on review after a hand pass by Morgan Reilly. 

In other action, Montreal rallied from down 2-0 after two periods to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in overtime. Kirby Dach, who was acquired by the Habs in a draft day trade with Chicago, scored the overtime winner. 

Elsewhere, Vancouver squandered yet another multi-goal lead as the Washington Capitals came back from down 4-2 to beat the Canucks 6-4, the Winnipeg Jets fell 4-1 to the Dallas Stars, and former Swift Current Broncos captain Jake DeBrusk had two goals as Boston beat Florida 5-3.

The Canucks continue their season-opening five-game road trip tonight in Columbus, while the Calgary Flames host the Vegas Golden Knights, the Edmonton Oilers welcome the Buffalo Sabres, and the Ottawa Senators host the Bruins.

There are two games in the WHL tonight, both in BC. The Kamloops Blazers welcome the Brandon Wheat Kings while the Winnipeg ICE are in Victoria to take on the Royals. The Broncos play their next game on Saturday when they host Lethbridge.

In minor hockey, the Graphic Edge U15 AA Wildcats are in Regina to take on the Rebels tonight following a three-point weekend in Prince Albert. They'll play at home for the first time this season when they host the Southeast Gold Wings this weekend.

ALDS game five rained out, NLCS kicks off tonight

The Houston Astros will have to wait at least one more day to find out who they’ll play in the American League Championship Series as the decisive game of the ALDS between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians was rained out on Monday night. 

It’s the second time that a game has been postponed in this series. Game five will now be played this afternoon in the Bronx. 

Game one of the NLCS is set to go tonight with the San Diego Padres hosting the Philadelphia Phillies. The Padres, who won 89 games in the regular season, eliminated the 101-win New York Mets and the 111-win LA Dodgers so far in the playoffs while the Philles knocked out the St. Louis Cardinals and the defending World Series Champion Atlanta Braves.

Bombers extend Collaros for three more seasons

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed quarterback Zach Collaros to a three-year contract extension through the 2025 season.

The 34-year-old has won back-to-back Grey Cups with the Bombers and was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Player in 2021. He's thrown for a career-high 4,115 yards and 35 touchdowns this season.

The Bombers have wrapped up first place in the West Division with a 14-3 record and will host the CFL's West Final.

Chargers beat Broncos in OT on MNF

Dustin Hopkins nailed a 39-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Los Angeles Chargers to a 19-16 win over the Denver Broncos in the NFL Monday nighter. Hopkins made four field goals and Austin Ekeler added a rushing touchdown for the Chargers. 

Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson suffered a hamstring injury during the game and his status for their next game on Sunday against the New York Jets is unknown. 

NBA regular season opens with Warriors getting rings

The curtain rises on a new NBA regular season with last season's champions, the Golden State Warriors, hosting the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Warriors will receive their championship rings before the game, and it will be the fourth time in the last eight years that they'll open the season as defending champs.

The other game tonight has the Boston Celtics, whom the Warriors defeated in the Finals, hosting the Philadelphia 76ers. The Toronto Raptors will start their season on Wednesday night when they host the Cleveland Cavaliers.
