It’s an exciting time as the page flips to a new calendar year, and many people will be ringing in 2024's approach with celebration.

Police will be out watching for impaired driving this weekend and conducting traffic stops to help keep the roads safe—but the public has a role to play, too.

The Swift Current City RCMP is reminding residents to plan a sober ride home ahead of enjoying social gatherings, such as calling a cab or arranging for a designated driver.

"There's plenty of opportunities for people to take advantage of that safe ride home," he said. "If you are concerned about someone driving impaired, you can try and prevent that by speaking to them, educating them; but you know if that's not working, we encourage people to call us as soon as they can. Don’t wait until someone drives drunk."

However, when witnessing an individual drive away while under the influence it's important to gather as much information as possible and to call the local detachment as soon as possible.
