storm clouds

Heavy rain, strong winds and hail have hit a number of communities across southern and central Saskatchewan on Thursday.

A storm moved through the southwest and hit Swift Current late in the afternoon bringing a lot of rain and some high winds. Assiniboia saw winds of 120 kilometres per hour with nearly 30 millimetres of rain, and Val Marie took in more than 50mm of rain. Some other areas saw winds of 130km/h.

There were also reports of funnel clouds west of Saskatoon Thursday evening, and power went out in a number of communities including Regina, where the downtown and several neighbourhoods were affected.

Underpasses in Regina quickly filled with water, and in Saskatoon, the Idylwyld freeway underpass also filled with water.

More rain showers and winds gusting to 80km/h are possible this afternoon and tonight, but much better weather is expected for the weekend.
