What started as an alternative to the Ability Bowl has blossomed into its own unique event.

During the pandemic, the Sask Ability Bowl had to come to a halt as COVID-19 waylayed any event that placed people at risk for infection and transmission.

That lead to the creation of the Superhero Walk, Wheel and Run. An event that allows people to come together to raise money through Sask Abilities. Their goal this year is $120,000.

Sask Abilities of course hosts the event and organizes donations. Chris Martens is the community relations coordinator for Sask Abilities - Swift Current branch and is excited for the third rendition of the event.

"It's a really neat event that has both virtual and non-virtual components to it," said Martens. "People can fundraise in any sort of way that they can raise funds by doing something a little bit different than your typical event."

What makes this event special is the ability to plan your own facet of the event. That's what lead to its creation after all in the day of social distancing. Letting people go for separate walks, runs, or rolls depending on what they are capable of let the spirit of charitable giving permeate every level of ability throughout Sask Abilities members.

Some folks choose to do a five-kilometre run, others do a walk. Some have organized three-legged races at their schools.

"Absolutely anything you can think of," said Martens. "Because this specific event isn't a single event on a single day at a single location. It's an open event."

The event will go from September 16 to 26. For all ten days, people will be able to participate in some way they feel is appropriate.

The money going to Sask Abilities will be for SLYP-Out and Summer Fun. Both programs allow those with physical disabilities to interact, have fun, and gain a sense of independence. So far this year, they have already raised $65,000 before the event has even officially started.

You can donate yourself or get involved in the event by visiting the walk, wheel run website, or by visiting their headquarters at 1551 North Railway Street West.
