A former Swift Current resident has his art currently on display in the Art Gallery of Swift Current.

Bruce Anderson, who grew up in Swift in the 1960's has two series of paintings lining the art gallery's walls.

The two series, "Under a Big Sky" and "Continental Drift", both incorporate horses in the paintings, and signify human impact on the planet.

"Under a Big Sky" is described as breaking composition 'by presenting the sky in a separate panel to emphasize the physical connection to the earth and the historically exaggerated impact of humans on the earth'.

Meanwhile, "Continental Drift" is described as a series that 'superimposes horses on historical maps to comment on the reach of humans globally and the desire to codify, claim, and reclaim the earth for each succeeding society'.

As the two series vary in scale and subject, Bruce says he hasn't had the ability to view his work side-by-side in such a way as currently displayed at the Art Gallery of Swift Current.

"For me to see all of these works from the two series together is really important. I can relate to them in a different way and kind of understand them and they support each other as well in a different way that just seeing an individual one so that's important," he said.

The artist is appreciative of all levels of feedback on his artwork, as he says he doesn't want to control how people interpret them.

"It's pretty open. I know what I think I'm talking about. But I'm not offended if people just say they like a certain colour, or don't like an aspect of it - I'm cool with that," he said. "I hope that you can experience it on a number of different levels; I want it to read well across the room and I also want it to read well right up close too."

Kim Houghtaling, Art Gallery of Swift Current Director and Curator, has had his eye on Anderson's work since previous installments, leading him to bring the two latest series to the AGSC - something Anderson was appreciative of.

"It's great when people have any interest in your work. The fact that it's my hometown, there's certain validation that exists there, so that's great too," he said.

Anderson's exhibit opened on March 4th, and will run until April 23rd at the Art Gallery of Swift Current.
