treelighting 2014

The Christmas season is officially underway in Swift Current with Friday night's Centennial Light up the Future event, the third and final major event to celebrate the city's 100th anniversary.

"You really don't know what to expect in terms of how people respond to the weather, but I think the community just wanted to be involved in celebrating lighting up the future and what the future has in store for us," said Centennial Committee Co-Chair Dave Spencer. "Most importantly, it's an opportunity to gather together as a community, and celebrate friendship and community."

Hundreds of people came downtown to take in live entertainment at both Market Square and the Lyric Theatre, and to watch the new Light Parade sponsored by the Lions Club.

"The Lions Club did a wonderful job with organizing the parade," Spencer said. "The community came out in response with floats that were interesting and engaging, and I know everybody that was on the parade route really appreciated that."

Other activities included marshmallow roasting with the Swift Current Fire Fighters, live reindeer and horse and wagon rides. Santa and Mrs. Claus also made their arrival to Swift Current, followed by the traditional lighting of the downtown Christmas Tree.
