As the economy booms in Saskatchewan, the province faces a housing shortage, particularly in the area of affordable housing.

A Provincial Task Force from the Affordable Housing Corporation has met with Swift Current City Council, Southwest Crisis Services, and the Southwest Disabilities Group to discuss the issue of affordable housing in the province.

Task Force Member, Bob Pringel says, over the last year the province has seen an increase in the demand for housing.  He says, two years ago the vacancy rates were higher, and now suddenly there is a 0% vacancy rate.  When there is more demand for housing, the rent goes up.

Pringel says, currently, a number of Saskatchewan Housing Authorities have waiting lists.  Swift Current has roughly 170 people on their waiting list, with 120 on the list for social housing, which is the lowest-income housing.  An additional 50 people are on the waiting list for the affordable housing program.

Pringel adds that a report with recommendations will be prepared for the Minister of Saskatchewan Housing Corporation after the task force is finished visiting cities around the province.
