The start of a new tradition will be unveiled Monday morning at Swift Current city hall. The new initiative will be a flag raising ceremony in honour of Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope.

The Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $16.6 million in Saskatchewan with approximately 545 schools and 60 communities taking part in the run.

"We know that there have been lots of advances in treating cancer, but we also know there is a long ways to go," Swift Current Terry Fox Run Organizer Angela Lafontaine said. "(The run) offers a unique opportunity for the communities to come together, to celebrate and raise vital funds that we need to help support cancer research."

The Marathon of Hope has continued on with Fox's legacy, helping raise over $700 million dollars worldwide to fund cancer research.

The run is also the largest fundraising event in support of cancer research worldwide.

"(Cancer) is one of those diseases where you don't have to do anything wrong. Cancer doesn't discriminate, it affects everyone and anyone. I feel very strongly that we need to keep working hard (towards fundraising)," Lafontaine said.

This will be the 36th annual Terry Fox Run and to make it even more special Saskatchewan premiere Brad Wall has declared September 18th, 2016 Terry Fox Day in Saskatchewan.

The flag raising event will start at 10 a.m. with Swift Current being one of five cities in the province to participate in the first ever event.
