A nationwide volunteer organization showed off its colours last week in Swift Current with Purple Hearts Thursday.

The Canadian Royal Purple Society focuses on brain injury awareness and prevention.

In Swift Current, donations were made to the local women’s shelter thanks to the local branch’s volunteers and multiple organizations in the area.

Elizabeth Wooley, a member of the charity, said it was also a collaboration between the society’s branches in Beechy and Maple Creek.

“These bags were presented for helping women who have to leave their homes because of interpersonal abuse and or some form of injury,” Wooley said. "Of course, the number one thing for women abuse is concussions, as well as strangulation.”

A total of 60 purple bags for women and eight for children were donated to the local women’s shelter, full of items someone might need if they have to abruptly leave their homes.

BITE Dental Studio donated toothbrushes, Giant Tiger gave socks and gloves, some ladies from The Meadows donated 20 tuques they knit, and some smaller hotels in Swift Current donated shampoos, conditioners, and soaps.

Purple Thursday happens annually on the third Thursday of October.
