Spain sells Florida to the United States for five million U.S. dollars.

1948
At a meeting of the Engineering Institute of Canada, an official of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers discussed the use of radio-telephones in automobiles. About 50 automobiles in Toronto and Montreal were equipped with the technology. While there were no theoretical limits as to the number and types of vehicles that could be equipped with the radio-telephone, they discussed how the could see little practical value for the ordinary motorist.

1958
Lee Petty wins the first Daytona 500.
He is the father of Richard Petty, who would become NASCAR's all-time race winner. With sons Richard and Maurice Petty, he founded Petty Enterprises, which became NASCAR's most successful racing team. He was the grandfather of Kyle Petty, and great grandfather of the late Adam Petty.

Health officials in Vancouver criticized the tobacco industry for trying to increase their sales through campaigns directed at young people. In one specific promotion, free packs of cigarettes were distributed to university students. Public health authorities warned that these tactics compromised the health of the entire nation.

Miracle on Ice: In Lake Placid, New York, the United States hockey team defeats the Soviet Union hockey team 4-3, in what is considered to be one of the greatest upsets in sports history.

Health Canada project finds traces of cigarette smoke compounds in fetal hair; first biochemical proof that even offspring of non-smoking mothers are affected by passive smoke.

National news: CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand – One of New Zealand's biggest cities lay in ruins Tuesday after a powerful earthquake toppled tall buildings and churches on a busy weekday, killing at least 65 people in the country's worst natural disaster in decades.
It was the second major quake to hit Christchurch, a city of 350,000, in five months, though Tuesday's 6.3-magnitude temblor caused far more destruction the one in September.
