The RM of Swift Current Fire Department had a fiery start to 2024.

Around 10 p.m. on New Year's Day they were dispatched to a semi fire inside the yard of Warner Industries.

Upon their arrival, two semis were significantly engulfed in flames forcing fire crews to act proactively while also battling the blaze.

"We quickly gained control and extinguished them both," RM of Swift Current Fire Department Fire Chief Louis Cherpin said. "There was a big passenger bus parked right beside it, so we did our due diligence in protecting that unit too. We paid a lot of attention to that as we continued extinguishing the two semis."

Their preliminary investigation has revealed the fire started in one of the semis and spread to the other one but both vehicles had been burning for a while before they received the call. The two trucks that sustained heavy damage had been parked on the lot for a few days before the blaze.

"We don't expect any foul play, but we have to see what the cause of the fire was," he said. "We kind of have a suspicion what it is but we will do our due diligence. Burning while sitting there three or four days after arriving does raise some suspicions."

Cherpin believes the inferno was caused by a malfunction under the engine hood but he's aiming to review video surveillance footage of the yard before for coming to a final verdict.
