Southwestern Saskatchewan is currently being hit by an Alberta Clipper, with hazardous weather and strong winds increasing throughout the day.

The storm is expected to cause icy highways and roadways and a dramatic drop in temperature.

However, Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Terri Lang doesn’t expect the Swift Current area to receive much snow.

“Unfortunately, for much of southwest Saskatchewan, only a few centimeters worth," she said. “However, the falling snow combined with winds gusting as high as 70 to 80 kilometres per hour may cause some issues.”

Common for Alberta Clippers is a big push of extremely cold air driving the system. As it passes over the province, temperatures are going to plummet.

Tomorrow morning is forecasted to be around -20 with wind chills potentially as cold as -34.

“By Wednesday we'll see some recovery in temperatures as the ridge of high pressure moves off and another weather system starts moving in and bringing in some milder air,” said Lang.

While the weather remains dangerous this morning, anyone planning to head out on the roads should check the Highway Hotline for updates on snowplows, weather, and road conditions.
