The female Midget AAA hockey playoff start Wednesday night for the Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats.

The 6th place Wildcats drop the puck on a best of five series in Weyburn against the 3rd place Wings.

“The
key for us is going to be how we establish a forecheck and how we create offensive opportunities against this hockey team,” Wildcats Coach Terry Pavely told Home Hardware's Overtime Monday on The Eagle 94.1 FM. “We've seen when we're at our best we don't give up a lot of scoring opportunities.”

Both the Wildcats and the Wings are among the better defensive teams in the league. Scoring has been a struggle for Swift Current, but they've found a way to put the puck in the net while winning 4 of their last 5 games before playoffs.

“Our girls have really bought in the fact that they need to get to the net... create traffic,” Pavely said. “We've actually talked a lot about the model the Broncos play with. How they get a lot of traffic to the net and how they protect the puck... we've done a much better job of that and our power play has been better.”

Weyburn won all four games in the season series against the Wildcats. However, three of the four games were decided by 2-1 scores and the other was 2-0 in Weyburn's favour.

Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Thursday night at the Fairview West Arena.

In Midget AA hockey, the K-Motel Hurricanes dropped a 2-1 decision to the Notre Dame Hounds in game one of their third-round provincial playoff series at the Fairview on Tuesday.

Kyler Sachkowski scored Swift Current's only goal in the third period, as the Hurricanes find themselves trailing a total-point provincial series heading into a second game for the first time this season, and must win the return match by two or more goals to move on.

Game two of the series will be played in Wilcox on Thursday.
