Last night city council voted to advise the public of council's intent to amend a zoning bylaw. This deals with where marijuana dispenseries and production operations could be located.

It would split the downtown district up - in the more-centralized part further from the residential area, marijuana dispensaries would be permited.

In the perimeter part of the downtown district, council would have to approve a marijuana dispensary.

Also in town the heavy industrial area would be permitted as a location for cannabis production. But the light industrial area would need council's approval.

A public hearing will be held during the next council meeting on July 30. Council will make its deicison on September 10.

Two businesses received permits to set up dispenseries in Swift Current, but as of last night there aren't any businesses in discussion with the City about setting up a production operation.
