The significant rain that hit Swift Current earlier this year, not only caused problems for business and homeowners but for the Swift Current Creek as well.

Due to the rainfall, the creek banks were saturated, causing erosion in at least ten locations along the creek.

Mitch Minken, the general manager of infrastructure and operations, said that multiple high-risk locations were identified in Riverside Park near the Creekview Condos and the boardwalk.

"These locations are adjacent to the Chinook Parkway and require repair prior to spring runoff," he said. "There is fear that continued slumping of these areas will undermine the pathway causing more damage and safety concerns for pedestrians."

"The remaining bank failures that have been identified have a low to medium risk of causing further damage to adjacent property or infrastructure," Minken continued. "These areas will be budgeted for and completed in future years."

The City was provided with a quote of $55,000 from Knudsen Excavating to stabilize the high priority bank locations to a more stable angle, including erosion matting and vegetation.

Minken noted that an additional $25,000 was added as permits from the Water Security Agency and Department of Fisheries and Oceans may require additional work.

A total of $80,000 was approved by the city council for the Swift Current Bank Stabilization Projects. The fund will be reallocated from the 2019 Paved Street Rehabilitation project.
