Swift Current's Lyric Theatre is celebrating it's centennial with major renovation plans

The crown jewel of Swift Current's downtown core will be looking to shine a little brighter this year.

Plans are still underway to begin an extensive restoration of the Lyric Theatre, following a fundraiser during the last year that saw $500,000 come in through donations and pledges.

While they still await a decision on a possible matching federal grant, Chair of the Southwest Cultural Development Group, Gwen Uher is looking forward to the upgrades.

"We are going to start doing some renovations at the end of April," Uher says. "We are still waiting to hear though from an architectural firm to come up for the final plans for what we are going to do to the building."

The organization has been in contact with the feds since making the application for the grant, and Uher remains optomistic those matching funds will go through. "We have updated our financial information, so that has strengthened our application. That was telling them about Standard Motors being another Marquee sponsor, so now we just have to wait," she says.

Once more is known about the funding and the final design has been completed, the project is expected to go out to tender.
