A Swift Current school is supporting a campaign to end men's violence against women.

Students at Maverick School are wearing a white ribbon as a personal pledge never to commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women.

The White Ribbon Campaign was created in wake of the 1989 Montreal Ecole Polytechnique murders, and the ribbons are worn in the week leading up to the anniversary of the tragedy on December 6th.

Kade Neufeld, a student at Maverick School describes the campaign and how he feels continued efforts for awareness and change are definitely needed.

"The 'White Ribbon Campaign' brings awareness to men abusing women whether it be sexually, verbally, physically - any form.

A lot of times us as men feel we're supposed to be the 'protectors' when it comes to the relationship.

But a lot of times we'll hear of significant others being abused, and the people who are supposed to be protecting are just causing more pain.

I'd like to see this help bring more awareness to that fact," he said.

Matt MacDonald, another student at Maverick, explains that he hopes shelter from abuse becomes a reality for everyone.

"I live my life every day and I don't experience these things - I don't have to worry about this.

However, for a large portion of women not just in this country but around the world, they are constantly worried about this.

I can't imagine that fear or struggle they go through," he said.

Both Matt, and fellow Maverick student Kade Neufeld feel it's important for men to continue to step up.

"The issue has been put on the back-burner for so long. This is another way to help say 'No, you can't be doing that'," they said.
