An exhibition named "Health Region No. 1 Swift Current: The Birthplace of Medicare in North America" has taken over the Swift Current Museum.

The exhibition opened to the public this past Wednesday, September 14th.

Stephanie Kaduck, curator of the exhibit, explains the reasoning behind the name.

"This is the 70th anniversary of the formation of Health Region #1. A lot of people in this area and nationally don't realize healthcare as we know it was formed at Health Region #1 in Swift Current," she said.

Kaduck also explains initial health care development beyond some common assumptions.

"Tommy Douglas and provincial medicare is what people know. There were actually a lot of early initiatives that built the ability to create a health region.

The exhibition covers the whole process - Who got things going in the province, then regionally, to build our Health Region #1," she said.

An exhibition reception will be held this Wednesday, September 21st, for those wanting to learn more about the exhibit.
