Details regarding the death of a woman in police custody on Sunday have been released.

Swift Current RCMP received a request for a wellness check on a family member at 11:06 a.m.

She was located about 10 minutes after the call at a local hotel along South Service Road but declined help from EMS and police.

The 55-year-old was then taken into custody by police under the Mental Health Act and placed into an ambulance that was heading for the Cypress Regional Hospital.

While on her way to the hospital, she went into medical distress and became unresponsive. She was admitted to the hospital but was pronounced deceased at 12:26 p.m.

The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team was contacted by the RCMP at 1:20 p.m. following the death. The SIRT's Civilian Executive Director accepted the call to action and he along with four SIRT investigators travelled to Swift Current to launch an investigation.

The team of five will inspect the police actions during the incident and the circumstances around the arrest and death of the woman. RCMP will be responsible for any investigation into the incident. Saskatchewan RCMP said no further information will be released now but a final report of the investigation will be made public within 90 days of the investigation concluding.
