There have now been eight fires linked to SaskPower smart meters in Saskatchewan.

A fire on the weekend and another on Monday were reported in Saskatoon, in addition to six previous fires over the last two months.

The Crown utility is still saying that it's an acceptable number according to industry standards, considering they have installed over 100,000 with a goal of 500,000 meters installed. While the investigation into the cause of the fires continues, no further installations are being done.

SaskPower says that concerned homeowners can call or email them for an inspection, request to keep their old meters or choose to have their old meters put back on.

Swift Current's Light and Power Utility uses a different model of smart meter from the one that SaskPower had been installing, and they have said there have been no instances of those meters catching on fire.
