One of Swift Current's biggest summertime events donated this morning to a pair of local non-profit organizations.

Taking it to the Streets gifted $1,500 to both the SaskAbilities Swift Current Branch and Special Olympics Swift Current.

Leanne Tuntland-Wiebe, the co-event coordinator for Taking it to the Streets, said one of the main goals of the annual concert is to give back locally.

"Every year when we do Taking it to the Streets we always hope that we make a little bit of money to be able to make a donation back into the community and we made some again this year," she said.

She said picking the two-Swift Current-based charities was an easy choice given they've partnered with Special Olympics for four years and this year they also linked arms with SaskAbilties. The latter of the two also helped out at the event headlined by country star Gord Bamford.

"They cleaned up for us," she said. "These guys went through the grandstands and the arena and it was cleaner than it was beforehand."

The cheque headed to SaskAbilities will count towards the organization's fundraising total for Walk, Wheel, Run that wraps up at the end of today.

"Being here and accepting this generous donation with our fine partner with Special Olympics is such a joy for me today," said Kimi Duzan, a Regional Director for SaskAbilities. "It's a good way to start a Monday and a great way to start a week."

Rhonda Gleim of the Special Olympics Swift Current was on hand to accept the donation headed their way and said the funds will help a lot of local athletes in sports such as swimming, bowling, floor hockey, baseball, and basketball.

"Probably use to help the rental costs to help keep our athletes participating in all the sports that they do and to make it economically available for them," she said. "Lots of them, financials are a trouble for them but this will definitely help lower their costs."

Taking it to the Streets gave away around 250 tickets to non-profit groups so they could partake in the festivities at no cost.
