Our city will be looking a little greener soon thanks to funding support from TD Green Streets and TD Tree Days.

On Friday September 7th, Swift Current's open spaces will be transformed thanks to the hard work of community volunteers.

Swift Current was one of 21 Canadian communities awarded a 2012 TD Green Streets grant in recognition of its innovative approaches to municipal forestry.  The grant is $15,000 and more than 250 trees will be planted.

"It definitely will help beautify our community, it will improve air quality, it also helps with soil erosion" Recreation Coordinator with the Swift Current Recreation and Parks Department Shauna Smuck said on the exciting project coming up in the city.

Smuck added the plantings will also provide habitat and food for wildlife and improve air quality, as well as promote community involvement in the protection and preservation of our urban forest.

The Recreation and Parks Department will be teaming up with Stark and Marsh Chartered Accountants and their go-green Friday volunteers program.  Peggy Marshall is recruiting on behalf of this event, and to get a hold of her for volunteering you can call 773-7285.

Smuck also added all volunteers will be thanked with a complimentary community barbeque at Market Square from 11:30-1:30.  Community members are encouraged to come out.
