Residents are being reminded to show extra care when riding their bikes.

Marilyn Durant is the assessor and coordinator for acquired brain injury for the Cypress Health Region. She says breaking a leg or scraping your knee on a bike is tough but a brain injury could last forever.

"Brain Injury Awareness is an ongoing initiative," Durant says. "Brain Injuries, also known as the silent killers, usually don't show symptoms and in 2008, there were 250 bike-car related injuries. The only cure for a brain injury is prevention, so they often have prevention events in schools and talk to people and communities throughout the year regarding how to change their community and the way they do things to accommodate their safety."

Parents and kids are welcome to come out and take the safety course, and then get their helmets fitted and bikes inspected, followed by a ride with the Swift Current Cycling Club.

Bike Safety Day will be held on May 27th in Highland Park from 4-7pm, with hot dogs served from 5-6:30pm.
