The Cypress Health Region has established a new clinic to help improve the well-being of children struggling with their weight.

The Family Centre for Weight and Health's main goal is to help children's self esteem and establish lifelong healthy eating and exercise habits.

"It was two years ago that we thought that we should have something different for the children, so they don't have to go to a routine clinic for their weight related issues, because weight is a very sensitive issue," said Pediatrician Dr. Shamsuddin Fakhir. "We wanted it so that families could come together to discuss their problems in extreme privacy.

"Weight is an important issue for families, and especially for children because it may have significant complications," he added. "As a result of obesity, it is possible that, for the first time in our history, children may have a shorter lifespan than their parents."

Children aged 6-17 are eligible for the program, and those interested can call 306-778-5118 for more information.
